Silver Purity Explained
The purity of silver is measured using the “fineness” system, which indicates the amount of pure silver in 1000 parts of metal alloy.
Pure silver (999) is soft and highly malleable. Because of its softness, it is not always suitable for everyday jewellery and decorative products.
Silver is commonly mixed with other metals such as copper to create stronger and more durable alloys for jewellery, tableware, and industrial use.
999 Silver – Pure silver with 99.9% silver content. Commonly used for bullion bars and investment products.
925 Silver – Also known as Sterling Silver. Contains 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. This is the most popular standard for silver jewellery worldwide.
900 Silver – Contains 90% pure silver and 10% other metals. Often used in coins, antique jewellery, and traditional silver products.
800 Silver – Contains 80% pure silver and 20% other metals. Commonly found in vintage European silverware and older jewellery pieces.
In Türkiye, especially in Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar and jewellery markets, 925 Sterling Silver is widely preferred for jewellery and gift items because of its durability, shine, and craftsmanship. Pure 999 silver is mainly used for investment products and collectible silver bars.
Türkiye also uses the “millesimal fineness” system to indicate silver purity. For example:
999 = 99.9% Pure Silver
925 = Sterling Silver
900 = 90% Silver
800 = 80% Silver
These fineness numbers are commonly stamped on silver jewellery and silver products as official hallmarks in Türkiye.
